JAV 111 — Great Organ Builders, Volume 7 — Mark Dwyer

Built in 1936, Opus 940 at the Church of the Advent in Boston represents a milestone in the development of American organ building. G. Donald Harrison’s career-long quest to develop light-pressure, blending ensembles, capable of seamless build-up, comes to fruition in this organ. Though altered in the 1960’s by Donald Gillett, the organ’s essential character remains intact. Mark Dwyer suggests that this recording might be subtitled "Anglican at the Advent," since all of the repertoire is by composers of Anglican affiliation and British or Anglo-American stock: Vaughan Williams, Sowerby, Parry, Thalben-Ball, and Willan. The smooth ensembles of the Advent organ are ideal for this music, played with sterling sophistication by Mark Dwyer. Willan’s remarkable Prelude and Fugue in C minor, with its stunning triple fugue, is a must-hear.
