Luís Urteaga Iturrioz was born on December 5, 1882, in Villafranca de Oria (now Ordizia) in the province of Guipuzcoa and died on April 11, 1960, in San Sebastián. He was organist of the famous Cavaillé-Coll organ of the parish of San Vicente in San Sebastián professor at the San Sebastián conservatoire. As a composer, Urteaga specialised in sacred choral music and works for txistu (traditional Basque flute) and organ, widely admired for their rich and inventive harmonies. His remarkable musical gift and easy talent for harmonisation, together with his active participation in church life and willingness to take on commissions, meant that he was exceptionally productive as a composer, leaving a multitude of works, particularly on religious themes, in a late romantic style. With this new CD Esteban Elizondo continues his series of recordings of basque organ composers, for which he already played music by Jesús Guridi (complete works) and Felipe Gorriti. The present CD has been recorded on was organist until the end of his life.
